What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment?

If you have muscle pain or tightness, migraines or carpal tunnel, the whole-body approach of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) could bring you relief. Doctors trained to perform OMT are Doctors of Osteopathy (DO) and address pain through the body’s network of joints, muscles, nerves and tissues. The goal is to help your body heal itself and increase your range of motion.

What aches and pains can benefit from osteopathic manipulative treatment?

This hands-on treatment is largely used to treat muscle pain, but it can also help people with other health problems such as:

  • Asthma
  • Sinus disorders
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Migraines
  • Menstrual pain

What does an osteopathic manipulative treatment entail?

Although OMT is a hands-on treatment, it shouldn’t be painful. Instead, you should feel light pressure, resistance and stretching. Your doctor may use the following techniques to gently relieve your pain:

  • Soft tissue massage – This gentle, hands-on method is closer to a traditional “light” massage in that it involves moderate stretching and light pressure on your muscles.
  • Muscle energy – This push-pull technique involves you moving your muscles in one direction while your doctor counters your movement.
  • Myofascial release – Used to release tension in the fascia (the thin layer of connective tissue that surrounds your bones, muscles and organs).
  • Osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine – The doctor will apply soft pressure to your skull to stimulate healing.
